It is principally engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and selling cutting tools, measuring instruments and mechanotronics equipments, besides, it also deals with the technology consulting and services, scientific achievements transferring, import and export business, etc.CTRI is founded in Harbin in 1956, and moved to Chengdu in 1965. It was confirmed as a high-tech enterprise in 1994, then, it acquired the import-export operation right in 1996. Ratified by Ministry of Science and Technology , CTRI became the supporting institution of State Precision Tool Engineering Technology Research Center in 1998. It was later approved into China Machinery Equipment (Group) Company and transformed to a scientific and technological enterprise by the State Economic and Trade Commission in May, 1999. Subsequently in 2000, it passed the ISO9001 quality certification. In 2001, with CTRI as the main body, CTRI Science & Technology Co, Ltd was authorized to establish by the State Economic and Trade Commission, uniting Hunan University, Jiangsu University and Chongqing Yuhua High-tech Ceramics Co, Ltd etc. 成都工具研究所于2010年8月更名为“成都工具研究所有限公司”，创建于1956年，1965年从哈尔滨迁至成都，是原国家机械工业部直属的我国工具行业惟一的综合性科研机构，一直是我国工具行业的技术归口单位，是省市“高新技术企业”、“国家精密工具工程技术研究中心”的依托单位，1999年进入中国机械工业集团公司，转制为科技型企业。2000年通过国家ISO9001质量体系认证。
2001年经国家经贸委批准，发起设立了\"成都工研科技股份有限公司\"。
